The first Romanian nanosatellite, which goes by the name Goliat, developed by a research consortium led by the Romanian Space Agency will be launched shortly today, according to an announcement on the website of the institution.

The launch will take place during the inaugural flight of the Vega rocket belonging to the European Space Agency, which departs from a base in the French Guiana.

Goliat is one of nine satellites to be shot into space by the Vega rocket. Its standard mission will last 6 months during which time it will take hi-res pictures and measure the dose of radiation and the flux of micro-meteoroids as well as transfer the collected data to the ground base for analysis.

Goliat is a cubic-like satellite with the sides measuring 100 millimeters each and a weight of 1,062 grams.
