Unilever South Central Europe has announced the aquisition of Darko, the second largest producer of ice cream in Bulgaria owned by Balkan Accession Fund. The value of the deal has not been made public.

The transaction enables Unilever to enter the Bulgarian ice cream market and it includes all of the Darko brands, its distribution network as well as a production unit. In 2010 Darko has reported a profit of EUR 7 million.

“Darko is a valuable asset for us because it has well-known brands and strong positions on the market. We will use the current business  and the global leadership position of Unilever in this field in order to further consolidate our positions in the Balkan region,” said Marc Desefansm, president of Unilever South Central Europe.

In Romania Unilever has bought the Napoca ice cream producer back in 2009 from Friesland Foods. The deal was estimated at less than EUR 5 million.
