Romania is a target of cyber attacks sponsored by other states, the head of the cyber crime department with the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) said on Friday.
According to Florin Cosmoiu, head of SRI’s Cyberint Center, Romania has been targeted by sponsored cyber attacks because of its status of EU and NATO member state.
The purpose of the attacks is to obtain strategic information and to attack infrastructure of strategic importance, Cosmoiu said. “In this field, the dangers we are facing everyday come from many sides. They are attacks sponsored by states that are targeting, for instance, a country’s strategic institutions, critical infrastructures.
Such attacks are not a Romanian phenomenon; instead, they occur in all countries, Cosmoiu argued. “we are a target of state-sponsored attacks, because we are NATO, EU members and some states that are engaged in such attacks are also targeting us. They want to steal strategic information from Romania and are targeting our critical infrastructure”, Cosmoiu said Friday.
Florin Cosmoiu participated in the Evolving Threat Assessment Constant Mission conference (September 22-23), organized by NATO and the Aspen Institute in Bucharest.
