Apa Nova Bucharest, the operator of tap water and sewerage in the Capital City, increased the price of one cube meter (1,000 liters) of drinking water by 9 percent, from RON 3.31 to RON 3.61 (plus VAT), and the tariff for one cube meter waste water from RON 1.74 to RON 1.9 (plus VAT).

The increase was approved by the National Regulatory Authority for Public Services (ANRSC) on June 26 and came into effect on July 1.

Apa Nova Bucharest, controlled by the French group Veolia Environnement, says that the increase is a result of „the rise of inflation, the devaluation of the national currency, the increase in the minimum wage etc.”

The last increase of the price of the water was operated five years ago, in March 2013. The water service company mentions in the press release that the price is still one of the lowest among the largest European Capital cities.

Apa Nova Bucharest is controlled by Veolia Environnement with 73.69 percent of the shares, the other shareholders being the Bucharest Municipality with 16.31 percent and the Employees Association of Apa Nova with 10 percent. The company ended last year with a turnover of RON 720 million and a net profit of RON 128.9 million.

The VAT for water services and sewerage is set to decrease from 19 percent to 9 percent from January 1, 2019.
