Almost 30 percent Romanians would like to start a self-employed activity in the next decade, study shows

Around 30 percent Romanians state that they wish to be self-employed in the next decade, compared to the 20 percent of the global respondents stating that they intend to start such an activity in the next 10 years, shows a PricewaterhouseCoopers study.

The PwC study highlights significant differences between men and women in terms of professional expectations. While 43% of the Romanian men participating at the survey stated that they would like to start their own business in the next 10 years, 46% of the women said they would like more time to spend with their families in the next 10 years. All in all, 40 percent of the surveyed say that in 10 years’ time they would like to enjoy a better work-life balance

However, only 32 percent of the Romanian respondents state that in the next 10 years they see themselves as having vastly more responsibilities than they have now, with a salary to match. Peter de Ruiter (in picture), Head of Tax and Legal Services, PwC Romania, believes that two years of recession have changed the attitude of those who have worked through it.

“Employers who push their workers to deliver more, without monitoring and reviewing the impacts, will end up hurting themselves. Morale and loyalty can be chipped away and result in a mass exodus of the most talented when more sustained economic growth arrives”, says de Ruiter.

The Managing Tomorrow’s People: Where will you be in 2020? survey was conducted in early 2010 by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and is based on a total of 5,746 responses from 113 countries. The study explores the work aspirations and expectations over the next decade of 5,700 professionals from 113 countries worldwide
