Romanians buy on average 200-300 grams of processed meat products three times per week taking the market to about EUR 800 million, according to representatives of local meat producer Meda cited by Mediafax.
Consumption peaks during the autumn months and the lowest sales are reported during the fasting periods before Christmas and Easter and in January.
Meda forecasts a EURA 28.5 million turnover for 2013, up 5 percent y-o-y. Some 10 percent of production is exported to countries with large Romanian communities. In recent years it has become a performance for a meat processing companies to manage not to report losses given the rising costs of raw materials used – prices of inputs were up by 30-60 percent at the end of 2012 – commented company representatives.
The company plans to invest EUR 1.3 million this year in production equipment and a new visual identity. Meda was set up 15 years ago and says that it has since invested over EUR 20 million in production. At present the meat processor produces some 12,000 tons of products per year.
Meda is owned by Romanian businesswoman Luchi Georgescu who also owns local wine producer Vincon Vrancea.
