Private label sales represented 23 percent of Mega Image’s turnover in Romania in 2013 or about about EUR 121.8 million (RON 538 million), according to a company report cited by Mediafax. The retailer, part of Belgian Delhaize group, operates a network of 331 stores in Romania under the Mega Image (supermarkets), Shop&Go (proximity stores) and AB Cool Food (only one store which sells exclusively frozen foods retail brands) retail brands. It’s private labels are 365, Gusturi Romanesti and Delhaize.

Frans Muller, CEO of Delhaize, has previously stated that developing the private label portfolio and improving services are the group’s priorities in Romania, according to Mediafax.

Mega Image reported last year a EUR 12.5 million (RON 55.1 million) net profit (up by 18 percent y-o-y) and EUR 530 million (RON 2.34 billion) turnover )up by 33 percent y-o-y), according to data from the Ministry of Finance.

Mega Image was one of the few retailers that have maintained an aggressive expansion pace over the past years. This year it opened over 30 new stores after in 2013 it added 104 new units. The retailer has been focusing particularly on opening new Shop&Go proximity stores which have a smaller sales surface compared to the regular Mega Image supermarkets.

The previous year it increased its profit 3.5 times to RON 46.7 million (EUR 10.5 million) on the previous year, while its turnover rose by 44 percent to RON 1.75 billion (EUR 394 million), according to public data, after opening 88 new outlets.

Mega Image is owned by the Belgian Delhaize Group. Most of its local stores are located in Bucharest but the retailer also operates stores in Constanta, Ploiesti, Pitesti, Brasov, Targoviste and other local cities.
