Romania’s National Day marred by significant snow storm

A significant winter storm is unfolding in eastern Europe with Romania being the hardest hit at the start of the week when Romania celebrated the Great Union Day on December 1. 4,000 Romanians bared the awful weather to take part in the traditional military parade that took place in the Capital, with president Traian Basescu and prime minister Victor Ponta in attendance. The parade included 2,700 officers and 260 military vehicles.

The weather conditions proved to be so bad, that the air-show that traditionally accompanied the parade had to be canceled.

Moving on into the week, Bucharest can expect around 12 cm (5 inches) of snow to fall. The snow will occasionally be mixed with sleet and rain before lightening up for Wednesday, according to Accu Weather. Craiova and Bacau will also take the brunt of winter’s arrival, while bordering areas of Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine will have some impacts from the storm, parts of southern and eastern Romania will face severe disruptions to travel and daily routines.

High pressure centered over the Baltic states has ushered a very chilly air mass southward into eastern and southeastern Europe to start the week, setting the stage for the significant winter storm.

The Romanian Weather Authority issued a Yellow Code for snow and blizzard for most of the country that will last until Tuesday, 10 pm. According to the weather forecast for the next two weeks, temperatures will increase in the next week and conditions are expected to worsen again as we approach the Holidays.
