Irish community in Romania celebrates St. Patrick’s Day this weekend

The Irish community in Romania is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, on March 17th. The cultural and religious celebration that is Ireland’s national day commemorates St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated in Bucharest’s Old Center, in the Lipscani – Smardan area. The Romanian-Irish Cultural Association, in partnership with the Irish Embassy in Bucharest, Culture Ireland and the Irish Way Irish Dance Association, is organizing starting 17.00 a series of cultural events for the occasion.

At 16.00 a parade will walk along the streets of the Old Town on drum and pipes music. At 17.00 students of the Anne Marie Cunningam Dance School will showcase their mastery of traditional Irish dances. This will be followed by a program of medieval Celtic music performed by Hungarian ensemble Bordo Sarkany. The same band will lead the parade at the beginning of the event.

Irish band the Amazing Apples, special guests of the Irish Embassy in Bucharest, will follow in the program, which will end with a Celtic rock  with Irish punk influences performance from the Blackbeers.
