How to weather being stranded in snow. Seven rules for winter travel

Newsroom 13/02/2012 | 13:58

Golden rule of law: if you hear that it (will) snow(s) heavily…better not travel.

But if you really must do so, then pack very carefully. Bear this in mind: in winter, you know when you leave but you don’t know when you will arrive to your destination.

  •  Rule number one: map your route carefully and get informed on the weather conditions. Also plan alternative routes. Write down the phone numbers of the roadside assistance company, as well as any other needed emergency phone numbers. Don’t forget your cell and charger.
  •  Rule number two: let your friends and family know where you are going and which route you will take as well as if you change the route. Make sure your car is equipped for winter.
  •  Rule number three: take plenty of water with you. Even if it seems hard to believe, dehydration is one of the main risks you run if you are trapped in winter somewhere, even with all the snow around. Eating snow will affect your body heat and take up a lot of energy to melt.
  •  Rule number four: take plenty of food. Go for food with a rich energy and protein intake such as chocolate and cereal bars.
  •  Rule number five: bring plenty of warm blankets, warm clothing, extra coats, hats, gloves and pillows to use in case you get stranded.
  •  Rule number six: put together an emergency first aid kit containing supplies such as bandages, antibiotic ointment, gauze and scissors.
  •  Rule number seven: if your car gets stuck in snow, stay with the car. The car is your safety net. Do not venture out on your own, because winter landscape can be easily confusing and you may end up being stranded.
