Facebook says spammers posing as digital marketing firm were behind latest data breach

Facebook believes the massive data breach that occurred at the end of September was perpetrated by spammers claiming to run a “digital marketing company”, according to anonymous sources talking to the Wall Street Journal.

The company says the hack was an attempt to make money via deceptive advertising. About 30 million people had their login tokens stolen, and hackers took their account details and contact information.

Some had speculated that the hack was state-sponsored. Facebook VP Guy Rosen said on Friday that the company did not believe the latest attack was related to the upcoming US midterm elections, but added that the FBI was also investigating the case.
