eToro, the trading and investment platform, has unveiled SpaceTech, a new portfolio that provides retail investors with exposure to the companies leading the advancement of space technology and exploration.

Since Neil Armstrong’s historic moon landing in 1969, humanity’s fascination with space has only intensified. Over the past six decades, this drive for cosmic exploration has led to the development of new technologies that have improved ‘terrestrial’ industries like telecommunications and geolocation services, while also creating new industries like space tourism.  From India’s moon landing on the south pole to Virgin Galactic’s first spaceflight, we are ushering in a new era of exploration and commercial space travel. Today, the space market is valued at $447 billion and is projected to surpass one trillion by 2030.

While retail investors can’t invest directly in NASA or SpaceX, other avenues exist to capitalise on the space race. From exposure to publicly-traded aerospace and defence companies to manufacturers of rockets and satellites, our new SpaceTech portfolio offers our users access to an industry that’s just taking off,” commented Dani Brinker, Head of Investment Portfolios at eToro.

To provide a diversified investment opportunity encompassing the full spectrum of space exploration, eToro’s team of investment experts handpicked the companies leading space exploration, space technology, and satellite operations. The initial allocation showcases sector pioneers like Virgin Galactic, known for developing spacecraft for human spaceflight and space tourism; Airbus and Boeing, with their space and defence division focusing on spacecraft and satellite systems; Iridium Communications, which primarily offers satellite communication services through its expansive satellite network; and Northrop Grumman Corp, a major defence and space company with various space exploration and satellite projects under its belt.

The SpaceTech portfolio’s allocation features 30 stocks, each holding an equal weight of 3.33% of the total portfolio (full list here). These selections were chosen based on a variety of criteria, including market capitalization, liquidity metrics, R&D expenditure, and analyst ratings. The portfolio will undergo an annual rebalance to ensure its continued relevance and optimization.

Initial investment starts from USD$500 and investors can access tools and charts to track the portfolio’s performance, while eToro’s social feed will keep them up-to-date on developments in the sector. For now, this portfolio is not available to US users.
