As climate change and its large-scale negative effects are no longer just presumptions but a reality we are all facing on a daily basis, every member of society, including those in the business environment, must behave and do business in a more sustainable way. Business Review talked to representatives of large companies in Romania and highlighted several solutions that can ensure a greener and safer future for the coming generations. Implementing sustainable urban development, water management, and farming, supporting businesses with green finance, and finding ways to lower carbon emissions in all our activities are among the actions that could be part of the solution.
Beatrice Dumitrascu, the CEO of the Residential Division at One United Properties: “One United Properties is the largest residential, office and mixed-use real estate developer and investor in Romania, based in Bucharest. The company has been focusing on sustainability practices since its first developments. Its purpose is to build new and improve existing communities, by developing quality, energy-efficient buildings. By serving this mission, the company will generate long term value growth for its community and all its stakeholders.
One United Properties strategy focuses equally on the Environmental, Social, and Governance aspects. As a leading green developer in Romania, how One builds has a direct impact on the communities around us. The sustainability strategy is anchored to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
In 2021, the developer made significant steps in terms of sustainability commitment, by continuing to focus on responsible construction where majority of the waste is diverted, by investing in the first historical landmark restoration, by starting a partnership with Veolia for implementing the latest renewable energy solutions for residential developments, by committing that new office developments will meet the net zero carbon emissions standards, by elaborating a new Code of Conduct for its suppliers, as well as setting the premises for the first ESG Committee of a Romanian public blue chip company.
One United Properties environmental strategy includes development of a 100% Green Homes certified residential portfolio, a 100% LEED and WELL certified office portfolio, as well as a pledge that all new office developments will meet the LEED Zero Carbon standards. At the level of construction phase, approximately 65% of the waste generated on the nine construction sites where One United Properties developed in 2021 was diverted – reused, recycled, or repurposed, instead of being buried in the landfill.
2021 marked a new milestone in the history of One United Properties as the company deployed, for the first time, capital in historical landmarks restoration, following the acquisition of Casa Braikoff. The historical location is undergoing complete refurbishment and will be known as One Athenee. Furthermore, in March 2022, One United Properties acquired the former Ford Factory, located within One Floreasca City, which will be restored and transformed into a retail space, One Gallery. Over the next two years, One United Properties estimates investments of a minimum of 70 million euros in the urban regeneration of abandoned historical landmarks in Bucharest, with the purpose of protecting and regenerating the cultural heritage of Romania’s capital.”
