Philip Morris International (PMI) ranks first in the Forbes 2024 Net Zero Leaders, a list of the top 100 U.S. companies making significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Forbes used data from Sustainalytics and Morningstar to assess companies’ commitment to a zero-emissions future, considering management structure, risk assessment, governance, and carbon reduction strategies. Financial strength to withstand industry competition and economic turbulence was also evaluated.

“As our company transforms towards a smoke-free future, we strive to do so in the most sustainable way possible, including best practices in carbon emission reduction,” said Jacek Olczak, Chief Executive Officer, Philip Morris International. “We are honored to be recognized by Forbes as the top-ranked company leading efforts to build a carbon-zero future.”

This recognition adds to PMI’s growing list of external accolades for sustainability performance and reporting, including:

  • Membership in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Steering Committee for the seventh consecutive year (March 2024)
  • Triple A score from the Carbon Disclosure Project for the fourth consecutive year and PMI’s placement among global leaders in environmental transparency and action (February 2024)
  • Early Adopters nomination for promoting the adoption of Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations (January 2024)
  • Inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI) for the first time and the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Composite Index for the fourth consecutive year (effective December 18, 2023), along with achieving ‘Prime’ status in ISS Corporate ESG Rating (ISS ESG Rating as of November 21, 2023)
  • Recognition by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its emission reduction goals related to forests, land, and agriculture (FLAG), making PMI one of the few companies to receive this acknowledgment.

“Our sustainability approach goes beyond minimizing negative impacts and mitigating risks. Closely linked to our transformation strategy, sustainability has always been a key opportunity for innovation, growth, and long-term value creation,” explained Jennifer Motles, Chief Sustainability Officer, Philip Morris International. “Our dedication reflects our response to shareholder and stakeholder concerns, and our climate change strategy continually addresses relevant risks while seizing opportunities offered by a low-carbon future.”

“Philip Morris Romania continues to strive for greenhouse gas emission reductions at the PMI factory in Otopeni and throughout our distribution chain. The most significant carbon reduction project at the Otopeni factory involves installing 12,465 square meters of solar panels with a capacity of 2.3 MW/hour to produce green energy, thus reducing natural gas consumption, a major source of carbon dioxide,” said Emma Zeicescu, Director Communications, Philip Morris Romania.
