LEKTRI.CO, one of the most important players in the field of electric mobility in Romania, presents the e-mobility index and a retrospective of the market for the year 2023. According to the analysis, Romania surpassed 42,000 electric vehicles, after registering over 16,800 vehicles last year, 35% more than in 2022. At the same time, the charging infrastructure has reached approximately 5,000 public chargers.

As per the analyzed data, December 2023 saw 1,454 electric vehicles registered, including 84 LCV vehicles, a decrease of 38% compared to the same period last year. The best month in 2023 for e-mobility was July – with 2,134 registrations, while April was at the opposite end – with just 962.

“This year Romania has remained constant in terms of e-mobility. We had over 1,000 units registered each month, with only one exception, and we are rapidly approaching the milestone of 5,000 charging points. Electric cars are the future, and I believe that more and more Romanians are moving towards e-mobility, and the market will continue to grow. We will continue our mission to make electric mobility accessible to everyone, offering high-quality products and innovative technological solutions,” stated Claudiu Suma, CEO of LEKTRI.CO.

Among electric vehicles, Dacia Spring exceeded the threshold of 16,000 registered vehicles in total, maintaining its position as the leader with 6,877 units registered last year alone. The second and third places are occupied by Tesla models, becoming the second most popular model after Dacia, with 2,156 registrations for Model Y and 1,149 for Model 3. The top three accounted for over 60% of the total registrations last year.

Compared to the previous year, Renault ZOE dropped off the podium, with only 169 units registered in 2023. On the other hand, the model that surprised in 2023, with approximately 500 vehicles registered, was Volkswagen eUP!, which maintained the fifth position, followed by Hyundai Kona and VW iD3. Renault Megane E-Tech is approaching 1,000 units, and the top 10 is rounded off by BMW i3 (9th place) and Nissan Leaf (10th place).

Also, the high-end segment, where models of brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche are centralized, recorded the most registrations in November, with BMW being the most popular premium brand, with 70 units out of 143.

Romania has approx. 5000 public electric chargers

In terms of charging infrastructure, we count only unrestricted public chargers, with the most used being AC Type 2 and fast-charger CCS/CHAdeMO. According to PlugShare*, as of January 2024, there are 4,967 public chargers in Romania. Of these, 1,509 are CCS/CHAdeMO and 3,396 are Type 2, distributed across 2,067 locations. The Tesla Supercharger network has reached 62 rapid charging points, distributed in eight locations across the country, available for users of other car brands as well.

The charging infrastructure has also seen rapid development, with more and more charging hubs with multiple points in various locations across the country, both within cities and on main transit routes. Operators such as Renovatio E-Charge, EnelX, EON Drive, Mol Plugee, EVConnect, Plugpoint, Eldrive, EvGoSmartCharge, and others are constantly investing in the development of the charging network.
