Concentrated household powder laundry detergents will help Romanian consumers reduce the impact on the environment

The Romanian Union of Cosmetics and Detergent Manufacturers (RUCODEM) launched the Product Resources Efficiency Project Powder Romania – PREP P RO, a voluntary initiative similar to the one launched by A.I.S.E. The voluntary initiative proposes the development and encouragement of Romanian consumers’ habits towards more sustainable models in the field of washing clothes, with more concentrated powder detergents. The initiative has the support of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests and the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC). RUCODEM will run a communication campaign, lasting three months, to inform the Romanian public about the correct dosage, with a view to sustainable consumption of concentrated household powder laundry detergents, in order to have a positive impact on the environment.

The PREP P RO initiative appeals to the societal responsibilities of detergent manufacturers and we thank those who joined this project, confirming their commitment to support a continuous improvement of the sustainability of their products. At the same time, with the help of an information campaign, consumers will be informed about the new recommended dosages and encouraged to follow them thus contributing to reducing the impact on the environment,” says Mihaela Rabu, general director of RUCODEM.

The voluntary initiative PREP P RO is similar to those launched by A.I.S.E. (International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Care Products – www.aise.eu) in the field of universal household powder laundry detergents in Europe (PREP-P). After the full implementation of the initiative carried out at the level of the other European countries, A.I.S.E. identified the following potential environmental reductions: over 115,000 tonnes less chemicals; over 8,000 tons less packaging; with about 6,000 fewer truck trips.

A.I.S.E. congratulates RUCODEM for the launch also in Romania of the voluntary initiative of the washing powder detergent industry with concentrated formulas, in order to offer consumers more sustainable products, while maintaining a high level of performance. The benefits for consumers and the environment are significant through reducing ingredients, packaging and transport, thus also contributing to reducing CO2 emissions and mitigating climate change,” says Susanne Zänker, Managing Director of A.I.S.E.

To improve the sustainability of the laundry process, companies participating in the RUCODEM initiative reformulate their regular powder detergents in a more concentrated form.

All concentrated powder detergents introduced on the market in the context of PREP P RO will be signaled with the help of icons placed on the front of each package and corresponding to the dosage table, to ensure the best visibility and thus the easy identification of concentrated products. These visuals will provide, in an easy-to-understand way, key information about the concentration level and inform consumers about the proper dosage.

Thanks to concentrated powder detergents, consumers will use less product to wash the same amount of laundry, with the same quality of final results. The PREP P RO campaign will encourage them to change and develop new dosing habits, to use less powder detergent to wash the same amount of laundry with the same quality of the final result. They will also be able to reduce the environmental impact by using the lowest recommended temperature, avoid under-loading the washing machine and dose according to the degree of soiling of the garments and water hardness levels.

Projects similar to PREP P RO, carried out in Europe in previous years, have proven to be beneficial for all the factors involved – for the environment and for consumers. Fewer ingredients were used, less packaging materials were used, less energy was consumed and consumers became more involved in contributing to continuous improvement in sustainability.
