Titus Corlatean, Romania’s foreign affairs minister, commented on Wednesday that matters related to the country’s rule of law will be “clarified” during the two-day visit of US Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland in Romania, which starts on Friday.

According to Corlatean, the assistant secretary will hold discussions with Romanian President Traian Basescu, while Prime Minister Victor Ponta will not attend any meeting due to a tight schedule, and has delegated minister Corlatean to lead the talks.

“It is a visit I welcome – I think it is very appropriate to talk and we will first discuss matters related to the strategic partnership, which is the cornerstone of Romania’s foreign policy,” said Corlatean, quoted by news portal www.hotnews.ro

“Romania’s commitment to rule of law and democracy remains extremely solid, as the same for the strategic partnership. There are big stakes, which are very important, in which Romania is a devoted ally of the US, and if we have this solid foundation, I think we can discuss and clarify aspects that may look sensitive at a certain moment,” added the minister.

Meanwhile, a group comprising Romanian-Americans and Romanians living across the globe, sent a letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry to thank him for sending his assistant secretary to discuss the rule of law in Romania.

“The Romanian politicians attempted recently to breach the rule of law by voting immunity for themselves, so it would become virtually impossible for authorities to charge them for corruption.  In addition, they tried to pass a law granting amnesty for the corrupt politicians currently being tried or already imprisoned.  These attempts deeply concern all of us here and our family members back in Romania,” said the submitted document.

The letter was signed by 436 people, including newspaper editors, doctors, professors attorneys and church leaders living in the US.
