While an American is willing to spend at least USD 3,000, matchmaking holds a promise in Romania as well, as a Romanian can pay an agency EUR 800 for this type of service, according to Umbrella for Two, the first matchmaking agency in the country.

“We are dealing with a market on the threshold of its 3rd year of offering this type of professional solutions. I think in several years we will be talking about a cost at least 50 percent higher and a much stronger dynamics and specialization of business in this field, given the potential of the market,” says Oana Totora, Umbrella For Two.

In Romania, there are nearly 630,000 single people aged between 18 and 65, living in the city with revenues above average. In Bucharest, there are nearly 180,000 such people and counting.

The typical client of a matchmaking agency in Romania is a specialist, a middle or top manager with revenues between EUR 2,000 and 4,000, with graduate and post-graduate studies. They can be single people (in most cases) or divorced, generally mature people with an active professional life who wish to start a long-term relationship with the suitable partner.

A survey carried out by Matchmaking Institute on 90 agencies in the United States and Canada shows that 55 percent of these gain between 1 and 9 new clients a month while 21 percent of them can add to their portfolio between 10 and 24 new clients.

This is similar to the situation in Romania, a market with dynamic growth, where a matchmaking agency can gain between 10 and 24 new clients, according to Umbrella for Two.

Similarly to the United States, where 60 percent of clients of matchmaking agencies are 60 percent women, in Romania 65 percent of those who want matchmaking services are also women.
