International design contest for Danube Delta promotion in the heart of Bucharest

Newsroom 11/03/2014 | 11:02

The “Ivan Patzaichin – Mila 23” Association organizes an international design contest which aims to give downtown Bucharest the feel of the Danube Delta, an eco-destination for holiday and inspiration for the city. The urban landscaping installations shaped as floating islands will be displayed this summer on Dambovita river between the National Library and the Unirii Bridge. The project is symbolically called eco-archipelago, which will reshape the area into the first interactive ecotourism exhibition in Romania.

The proposed floating installation will represent a chosen Danube Delta destination in a creative and attractive way for a potential tourist. Each participant or team can submit a maximum of three proposals. Each registered proposal must interpret a different destination from the list of eight. The eight proposed destinations from Danube Delta are Crisan, Old Chilia, Periprava, Letea, Mila 23, Caraorman, St. Gheorghe and Sulina.

The call is addressed to designers, artists, architects and interdisciplinary teams across the world interested to examine creatively and innovatively the water and its relation to the city. The participants can apply alone or in teams of up to 4 members, on their own behalf or on behalf of an office of architecture, design, or a public or private institution. Designers, artists and architects who register in the competition can form interdisciplinary teams with other professionals whose knowledge and skills can add value to the proposed projects. The teams cannot be composed of more than 4 people.

The deadline for registration and the submission of the works is May 7 and the winners will be announced on May 16. Former rowing legend Ivan Patzaichin is the honorary president of the jury.

The other members are arch. Teodor Frolu – Secretary, arch. Șerban Țigănaș – President Architecture Guild of Romania, arch. Ștefan Ghenciulescu – Editor-in-chief Zeppelin magazine, arch. Gheorghe Pătrașcu – Chief-architect of Bucharest City Hall, conf. dr. Elena Tîrziman – Director the National Library Bucharest, curator and urban researcher Elke Krasny – Senior Lecturer, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, arch. d.p.l.g. Tristan Lannuzel – Assistant Professor, University of Kassel, Germany. This international jury will pick five projects to be built and displayed in the vicinity of the National Library.
