Yalco Romania, the official local distributor of Black & Decker and DeWalt power tools, posted a EUR 4 million turnover for 2009 with Black & Decker products representing about 65 percent of the sales. The company has also reported 30 percent higher sales for the first few months of 2010 and estimates that it will increase its turnover by 50 percent this year, to EUR 6 million.
Yalco plans to extend its product portfolio and its distribution network, which currently includes 250 stores nationwide. The company also intends to build a logistics center and warehouse next year.
The local DIY market amounted to about EUR 35 million last year and is estimated to grow by 8-10 percent in 2010 after a drop of almost 25 percent in 2009, according to Valentin Vasilescu, general manager of Yalco Romania. “There is still a lot of room for growth on the DIY market as per capita DIY expenditure remains very low in the region,” said Marielle Thomas, Black & Decker country manager for Greece, the Balkans and Cyprus.
Yalco Romania was founded in 2006 as the local subsidiary of the Greek Yalco group, which has so far invested EUR 1.5 million in Romania. After selling its business in Hungary, Yalco Romania remains the group’s only subsidiary, making up about 15 percent of the company’s sales in 2009.
