The targeted cities for this year are Hateg, Ramnicu Valcea, Medias, Constanta, Orsova, Arad, Lugoj, Simeria, Turda, Targu Jiu, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Oradea and Bucharest with the calendar of openings depending on the rhythm of business permits granted, according to company representatives.
Spar has already finished 11 projects, among which five hypermarkets and supermarkets are in Bucharest. The network has seven supermarkets in Arad, Resita, Deva, Odorhei and Alba-Iulia and one hypermarket in Targu Mures. The company aims to reach 55 stores, the final target being 250 locations. Spar Romania's general manager Rino Tizzanini said last year that the local investment plans were worth EUR 350 million and the network's development was being run in partnership with an investment fund in America.
Spar entered the local market in 2005. According to the company's leadership estimates, the first stores open in Romania ended 2006 surpassing expectations by at least 30 percent. The firm owns over 15,000 stores worldwide, registering EUR 27.9 billion in turnover for 2005.
