In Romania, Lidl has managed DIY chain Kaufland since 2005, when it entered the local market. Last year, Lidl Romania, operated by the German group Schwarz, announced it planned to develop a four-level office building and a 4,000-sqm logistic center in Chiajna, Ilfov county, where the company currently operates in a rented office building. In 2007, the firm announced it planned to open 11 discount-type units in Romania by 2011, following a total investment of EUR 150 million.
The first development was announced for Bistrita county, according to the local authorities. The German company plans to develop a 4,500-sqm unit in the area. Lidl has also looked at Bucharest for investments, besides other cities such as Iasi, Medias and Slobozia, where it has been in touch with the local authorities.
