Knauf Insulation, one of the largest manufacturers in the insulation materials market, part of the Knauf Group, has started the construction of its new production facility in Târnăveni, to be completed and commissioned in 2024. The new factory, which will have a production capacity of 100 million square meters, will accommodate over 100 employees, ranging from skilled workers to automation and maintenance engineers.

In March 2022, Knauf Insulation officially became the owner of the former Gecsat S.A. mineral wool factory in Târnăveni. In the first phase of the acquisition, completed last year, more than 4 million Euros were invested in modernizing and revamping the existing plant, which the company took over earlier this year, to increase production from 7,000 tonnes per year of mineral wool to 10,000 tonnes.

The construction of the new production facility, which started in early 2023 after obtaining all necessary approvals, is to be completed in 2024 and will be the most modern Knauf Insulation glass mineral wool plant in Central and Eastern Europe. The new production facility will create over 100 new jobs and provide an annual production of over 75,000 tonnes of mineral wool to serve both domestic needs and markets in Central and Eastern Europe. At the same time as the start of construction, the company also began the process of recruiting staff for the new factory on an online platform dedicated to the local community www.knaufinsulation-tarnaveni.ro.

The total investment in the Knauf Insulation project in Târnăveni, Mureș county, amounts to more than €135 million and will have a significant impact on the company’s turnover, which will increase by more than €50 million annually.

“This year we have taken another very important step for our business in Romania, with a direct impact on the local community and beyond. Implementing the investment will have a multiplier effect on the economy by driving other related investments and developing local suppliers of products and services in the region. Moreover, our mission is to become a central pillar in the sustainable development of Târnăveni and Mureș County. This means, in addition to community investments, ensuring superior and safe conditions for employees, a professional working environment, respecting the Knauf Insulation global standards”, says Adrian Garofeanu, General Manager of Knauf Insulation Romania and Bulgaria.

Knauf Insulation aims to achieve the highest quality performance at every point of operation it has, constantly engaging with the communities in which it operates. To this end, both for the modernization works at the Târnăveni site and for the construction of the new production facility, the company is working with local and national sub-contracted suppliers, generating a direct positive impact on the local economy.

Further, the construction process of the plant will fully respect the safety and integrity of the staff, as well as the highest standards of environmental responsibility for a more sustainable future, in line with the company’s commitment to “For a better world”.

As part of its sustainability strategy “For a Better World”, the company has been engaged for more than a decade in actions built around three key pillars: zero environmental damage by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, recycling production waste, incorporating the principles of the circular economy, and supporting constant campaigns for better and more sustainable buildings. Over the past ten years, the company has achieved a 23% reduction in energy consumption, a 67% reduction in waste produced, and a 43% reduction in fuel emissions.

Furthermore, following the demolition and modernization of the former Gecsat factory in Târnăveni last year, Knauf Insulation has managed to recover and recycle more than 23,000 cubic meters of brick and concrete waste.
