Head of Romanian highways’ agency steps down after PM scolding

Mircea Pop, the general director of the Romanian National Company of Motorways and National Roads (CNADNR) resigned today following criticism and negative media coverage of the way snow removal operations have been handled.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta said he had a meeting with Pop following an investigation of the PM’s control department and that CNADNR’s head decided to step down.

CNADNR has received a lot of bad press after last Thursday the institution’s directors had a meeting in the Balea Lac resort which ended late into the night despite the fact that a weather warning for snow and blizzard was coming into force.

Referring to this, the PM said it was unacceptable for the institutions’ employees to work while its management was partying.

Over the weekend, CNADNR has received criticism from vice-prime minister Liviu Dragnea for the way it handled the snow removal operations. He accused the institution of poor communication and being the “weak link” in the entire snow removal process.
