Anca Dragu is the new Governor of the National Bank of the Republic of Moldova

Update: Anca Dragu has been appointed Governor of the National Bank of Moldova for a 7-year term, a draft resolution was adopted on Friday by the Moldovan Parliament with 58 votes.

 

Original article: Igor Grosu, the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, announced today that he will nominate Anca Dragu, former Romanian Finance Minister and former President of the Romanian Senate, for the post of Governor of the National Bank of Moldova. The vote to confirm Anca Dragu as Governor of the National Bank of the Republic of Moldova will take place later today in the Moldovan Parliament. She has already been sworn in as a Moldovan citizen.

 

“Today, in the plenary of the Parliament, I will propose Anca Dragu for the position of Governor of the National Bank of Moldova. I have every confidence that Anca Dragu will build an independent and honest National Bank of Moldova”, said Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament.

Anca Dragu has extensive experience in the finance & banking sector and in public policies, both at national and EU level. She has worked for more than 15 years in the National Bank of Romania and the International Monetary Fund and was Minister of Public Finance in the Romanian Government. In 2020 she was elected President of the Romanian Senate.

“It is an honour for me to contribute to Moldova’s European course. We need strong, independent institutions to ensure the economic stability of the country and prosperity for all citizens. It will not be an easy road, but with patience, determination and skill we will be able to complete the European project”, says Anca Dragu.

Who is Anca Dragu, the first woman to become President of the Senate and the second man in the state? She worked as an Economist alongside Mugur Isărescu in the National Bank of Romania for 5 years, 12 years at the International Monetary Fund also as an Economist, 7 years at the European Commission as an Economic Analyst and later as Adviser to Deputy General Director, and was Romania’s Finance Minister and President of the Senate. In the public sector, she served as Deputy Director General of E.ON Romania.

Anca Dragu, an economist by profession, served as Finance Minister in Romania’s government from November 2015 to January 2017. Moreover, in 2020 she was the first woman to become President of the Senate and the second most important stateperson in Romania, all this is just part of a huge career that brings together 28 years of experience at major financial institutions both in Romania and internationally, as well as in the private sector.

With a bachelor’s degree and a PhD in Economics from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, as well as a Master’s degree in Public Policy and EU Accession from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest, Anca Dragu has attended various programs at Georgetown University, including the Central and Eastern Europe Fellowship Program, and George Washington University in Washington DC.

In over 28 years of professional experience, Anca Dragu has consolidated her expertise both nationally and internationally, working in the public and private sectors.

She was an economic analyst in the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission and, after 12 years in the International Monetary Fund office in Bucharest, she worked as an economist in the National Bank of Romania.

As a senator in the Romanian Parliament she was chairwoman of the Committee on Human Rights, Equal Opportunities, Cults and Minorities and a member of the Committee on Budget, Finance, Banking and Capital Markets and the Committee on Energy, Energy Infrastructure and Mineral Resources.
