What tourists lose in Romanian hotels

Around 10 percent of tourists staying in Romanian hostels and hotels return home without certain objects they’ve forgotten in accommodation units, according to a study conducted in September by the hotel reservation platform HotelGuru.ro. Among the most frequently forgotten items by tourists are clothes, personal care items, electronics, but also toys, money, documents or jewellery.

Most often, accommodation units find personal belongings such as clothes (42 percent of cases), personal care products (34.6 percent), toys (9.9 percent), electronics (8.6 percent), or books and jewellery (3.7 percent). The list of objects forgotten by tourists also includes gifts, documents and money.

Among the most valuable items found were phones, watches, cameras, gold jewellery, and a wallet containing about EUR 4,000.

In addition to objects that are inadvertently left behind, hotel managers are sometimes confronted with cases of tourists who leave with objects they took from the hotel.

Among the objects most frequently taken by customers include towels (45 percent), hangers (17.5 percent), remote controls (15 percent) and decorative items (5 percent). Other objects stolen by tourists are cutlery, pillows, room keys, glasses, but also light bulbs, hair dryer or bathrobes.

Most hoteliers declare that if they notice an object has been forgotten in the room, they immediately notify the tourist to recover their objects (67.5 percent of cases), while only 16.9 percent of them send items by courier, with payment to the recipient. 9.6 percent of accommodation units expect to be contacted for object recovery.

Occupancy rate in the 2018 summer season

Due to holiday vouchers, for 54.2 percent of the respondents, the occupancy rate of the accommodation unit was higher than last year, for 21.7 percent it was lower and for 20.5 percent no significant changes were recorded.

In 48.2 percent of the cases, tourists only sought accommodation, while 44.6 percent purchased accommodation + food.

The study was conducted on a sample of 100 respondents from all over Romania, who took part by filling out an online questionnaire between August and September.
