The minister delegate for European Affairs, Victor Negrescu, said today that the political changes inside the country will not affect the upcoming Romanian presidency at the Council of Europe.
The minister said that other countries which have held the Council of Europe presidency have had major internal political changes right before or during their mandate as well, and those changes did not affect their presidency – giving examples like Malta or Finland.
To support his claims, he highlighted the fact that the “day to day work” of the mandate will be done by experts, not politicians. However, he added that as a democrat he would like the process to be more transparent, but that the positions we present in the Council are those already established in working groups.
“The presidency is about how we manage this role of an impartial mediator at the European level, and furthermore, how we can launch themes that are of interest to citizens, which can have certain continuity, and how we can finish projects that are important for our citizens”, Negrescu said.
The minister added that Romania is no longer a new member of the EU and that it is perfectly capable of managing the 2019 presidency.
