Universal Studios International, a subsidiary of NBC Universal, has sued the Romanian public television SRTv, writes The Hollywood Reporter. Universal Studios is claiming USD 11 million in unpaid license fees for several films and television series.

The Romanian public broadcaster says it is doing its best to fulfill its commitments to its partners but points out to “tough” contract clauses, such as the obligation to buy series for as long as they are produced.

“The Romanian television has signaled on many occasions that one of the causes of the difficult financial situation that TVR currently finds itself in is related to a series of contract, especially related to the acquisition of broadcasting rights for sports programs, films, and series. […] Among the most expensive financial commitments undertaken by TVR is the films license contract signed with NBC Universal. This contract, which started in 2004, contains several tough clauses for TVR, like the commitment to buy series for as long as these are produced,” reads an official reaction from TVR. “Despite its financial difficulties TVR is doing its best to meet its obligations to its partners and wants to maintain good relationships with them and fulfill its contracts. TVR is open to negotiations to find equitable solutions for all those involved,” the public broadcaster said.
