Twitter buys Romanian start-up Summify

Twitter has bought a Romanian start-up called Summify, founded by Romanians Cristi Strat and Mircea Pasoi who made an exit from the company, two years later after the launch.

“Our long-term vision at Summify has always been to connect people with the most relevant news for them, in the most time efficient manner. As hundreds of millions of people worldwide are signing up and consuming Twitter, we realized it’s the best platform to execute our vision at a truly global scale. Since Twitter shared this vision with us, joining the company made perfect sense,” goes the announcement placed on the Summify blog.

Summify started under the name of ReadFu, and it was a web application called Social News Reader that connected to the Facebook, Twitter streams and using a special algorhythm made up a list of the ‘must-read’ items. This was followed by an iPhone application.

The announcement on the Summify blog details how the company reached this point.

“Roughly 2 years ago, we moved from Romania to Vancouver after being accepted into Bootup Labs, an awesome startup incubator. It has been an incredible journey, with lots of highs, a few lows, and many product iterations. In March 2011 we launched our email summary product and we’ve been blown away by the response ever since. Many of our users tell us we found a magical solution to a truly unsolved problem.

As Summify becomes integrated into Twitter, the new headquarters will be San Francisco and the team will work out of the Twitter office.

“We will be disabling new account registrations immediately and we will also be removing some features. We will keep the email summaries for a few more weeks, but at some point we will shut down the current Summify product,” says the company on its blog.
