Twice as many companies were started than closed in 2011 in Romania

Last year, the number of companies that were created in Romania was double the number of those that closed down. “This is an indicator of positive economic evolution in a year with 2.5 economic growth,” says Andreea Paul, state counselor of the prime-minister (in picture).

Last year, 68,589 companies were dissolved, which is three times less than in 2010.

Overall, during the three years of fully-fledged economic crisis 2009-2011, a total of 365,232 companies were founded and 334,403 closed their gates.

Thus, between 2009 and 2011, more companies were created than dissolved, except for 2010, according to the PM’s counselor.

“This is due to the re-launch of the Romanian economy, the growth in the appetite for assuming the entrepreneurial risk as well as measures adopted by the government,” she added.

However, Romania still needs to catch up to reach the entrepreneurship level of other European states. In Romania, there are only 24 companies per 1,000 inhabitants. The European average is 42 firms per 1,000 inhabitants.
