Turkish ship Medy sank this afternoon off Romanian Black Sea coast after the 17-member crew was rescued. The ship was carrying scrap iron and left the Constanta port around midnight.
Ion Voicu, head of the Romanian sea search and rescuing agency ARSVOM, said that nothing could be done for the ship as by the time the rescue team arrived on board it had tilted dangerously after taking on water, according to Mediafax newswire. He added that the ship sank around 12:50 p.m., about six nautical miles off the Constanta seaport dam.
The site of the wreck will be monitored over the next days in case of any fuel leaks.
