In the wake of the June 28 Istanbul attacks, President Klaus Iohannis has condemned the terrorist acts and has renewed Romania’s commitment to fighting terrorism.
Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport was hit by bomb and suicide attacks that killed 36 and injured 147, according to official reports.
“The terrorist attacks that took place on Tuesday night in Istanbul are an atrocity,” Iohannis wrote on his Facebook page. “Tens of people lost their lives and over 140 were injured, following an act of cruelty aimed at innocent people. I want to extend my most sincere condolences to the bereaved families; we are with those who are now fighting for their lives. Such attacks must be prevented, and our country is and will continue to be a committed partner in the international fight against terrorism,” the president’s message reads.
According to reports, three attackers opened fire outside and inside the terminal of the Ataturk Airport and blew themselves up after Turkish police started shooting at them. All three attackers were killed.
The attacks were condemned by political leaders around the world. Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium, whose capital, Brussels, was targeted by deadly attacks back in March. “Our thoughts are with the victims of the attacks at Istanbul’s airport. We condemn these atrocious acts of violence,” he tweeted from the EU summit in Brussels.
The Ataturk Airport, Istanbul’s main, is also one of Europe’s busiest, with more than 61 million passengers traveling in 2015.
