On October 2nd, 228 cyclists took part in the ‘Trip between the Sky and the Earth’ race, held every year in Targu Ocna. The race takes place underground, in the Tragu Ocna and Trotus Mine salt mines.
The race offers participants the unique chance to cycle through the tunnels of the salt mines, which are otherwise closed to cyclists. In doing so, they experience two totally different climates. First, participants cycle outside, in natural light, through the roads and surrounding hills, and later descend to the salt mines, where temperatures are much lower and continue cycling in artificial light.
The race is coordinated by teams of coaches and volunteers. By holding this event, unique in Romania, the organizers are hoping to have a positive impact on the area. In their view, the long-term benefits can include the development of local cycling communities and promotion of outdoor sport events.
In its 4th edition, the event is organized by the Transalpin Bike Association in collaboration with National Salt Society SALROM and the Targu Ocna Municipality.
