The Transport Ministry and the National Road Company CNADNR have started talks with US construction company Bechtel to decide the new schedule of the works at the Transylvania highway. The new dates will be extended over 2012, the current deadline for finishing the project.
“Due to budget constraints and delays in payments for the works performed in 2010, Bechtel has slowed down the pace of the works and has reduce the labor force at the construction site. The Transport Ministry and CNADR have started negotiations to reschedule the debt payments, ensure that the cost standards are met, and the schedule of the works is redone. To the extent that these will be solved, we can establish a new schedule for the works and new deadlines,” said official sources quoted by Mediafax newswire.
The Tranylvania highway construction project, on the Brasov – Bors segment, has started in 2004, after a EUR 2.2 billion contract was granted to Bechtel. Works were stopped in mid 2005 when the new government has started looking into the contracts closed by their predecessors. After the works were stopped the deadline for finishing the highway was extended to December 2012.
