Romania’s Transfagarasan road (DN 7C) could open for traffic earlier this year, on June 18, after the commission for analysis approved the move, according to Gheorghe Mihaita, chief of the Arges Department of the National Company of Motorways and Roads in Romania (CNADNR).
As weather conditions have been favorable this year, the CNADNR has requested the opening of the roadway before the deadline prescribed in the rules, which is July 1.
“The analysis commission for Transfagarasan, consisting of representatives of CNADNR-Bucharest and the Department of Arges and IGPR, met on Thursday on DN 7C to check road conditions in order to be able to reopen it. The entire route was verified. No one had any objections. So, we expect a decision from the leadership of CNADNR which, I believe, will be for the Transfagarasan to open Saturday. We are waiting, however, for written confirmation,” said Mihaita.
Under the regulations, the Transfagarasan road is closed each year from November 1 to June 30, but the period can be modified depending on the weather and the condition of the driving lanes.
The CNADNR announced it has also requested an update of the regulations, so as the road should stay open for traffic for the longest period of time possible during the year, in conditions of safety and comfort.
