The state has collected tobacco excise taxes of EUR 1.27 billion in the first nine months of the year, which represents 38 percent growth on the similar period last year, said Sorin Blejnar, president of the National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF).

Thus, between January and September last year, the level of the excise tax collection reached EUR 919 million.

The value of excise taxes also increased this year by 3.5 percent compared to 2010

The cigarette smuggling rate has decreased to 11.8 percent in September, which represents a 3.9 percent decline on July, when the level was 15.7 percent, says a study of the company Novel Research.

The peak of the cigarette smuggling phenomenon was reached in January 2010, when it spiked to 36 percent.

Smuggled cigarettes come mainly from Romania’s neighboring states, such as the Republic of Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine.
