The National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced on Wednesday a reference exchange rate of 4.5240 RON/EUR, up by 0.45 compared to the level of the previous sitting and the maximum level in 30 December 2016, amid worries by protests generated by the emergency ordinance passed on Tuesday by the Government.

On Tuesday, the BNR listed an exchange rate of 4.5038 RON/EUR. In the region, the forint and the Polish złoty were stable against the euro.

The local currency lost ground starting the first transactions, affected by street protests against the government emergency ordinance that reduced the sentences for several corruption acts, a report by Credit Europe Bank published Wednesday said.

The US dollar, lost ground from RON 4.2072 to 4.1935.
