Survey: 84.6 pct of Romanians don’t want refugees/migrants in their country

A new survey carried out in Romania shortly after the March terrorist attacks in Brussels shows that close to 90 percent of Romanians don’t want refugees or migrants to settle in their locality.

Moreover, 84.6 percent of the respondents said they don’t refugees or migrants to settle in Romania, up from 80.2 percent last November.

Only 11 percent of the respondents said they agreed to live nearby refugees or migrants.

“The data was collected following the terrorist attacks of Brussels from March 22 and on the backdrop of intensified discussions regarding the alleged link between terrorism and the recent migration waves. In addition, the challenges facing the European Union on managing the refugee crisis and the increase of anti-immigration messages both at an European and local level, have probably enhanced the disagreement of Romanians concerning the settlement of refugees in the country and in the locality they live in, respectively,” said INSCOP, the author of the survey.

The survey was commissioned by newspaper Adevarul. It was carried out between March 21 and 28. The study had a sample of 1,063 respondents that were at least 18 years old.
