Judges from the High Court of Cassation and Justice may announce their ruling in the case in which the president of the Romanian Senate is being prosecuted for perjury and aiding and abbeding.
At the last court appearance, anti-corruption (DNA) prosecutors asked for a three-year jail sentence for Tariceanu, claiming that the Senate president has been arrogant in maintaining his own version of events, despite the fact that the accusations are supported by strong evidence. They also claimed that “the obligation to be honest is completely foreign to Calin Popescu Tariceanu.”
On the other hand, Tariceanu’s defense lawyer said that the accusations against his client are not based on evidence.
Both the DNA prosecutor and the defense lawyer asked the court to change the indictment as to only maintain the perjury accusation and eliminate the aiding and abbeding claim.
Tariceanu’s case is related to the illegal retrocession of a surface of Snagov forest and Baneasa Farm, and DNA prosecutors claim that he made false statements about the case in 2016 and failed to reveal everything that he knew, in order to make it harder for culprits to be prosecuted.
