Romania’s unemployment rate down to 5.5 pct in Q4, one fifth of youth jobless

Romania’s unemployment rate went down by 5.5 percent in the last quarter of 2016 compared  to 5.7 percent in Q3, with the unemployment among young people being the highest, at 20.8 percent, according to the data published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The gap between genders was of one percentage point (5.9 percent for males and 4.9 percent for females), while the gap between rural-urban areas was of 1.5 percentage point (6.3 percent in rural area and 4.8 percent in urban area).

In the last quarter of 2016, the occupancy rate of the working-age population was 61.6 percent, a drop compared with the previous quarter by 1.5 percentage point. The occupancy level was higher among males (70 percent compared with 53.1 percent among females) and among individuals from urban areas (63.9 percent compared with 58.8 percent in rural areas). The occupancy rate among young people was 21.5 percent.

The occupancy rate among population aged between 20-64 years was of 66.5 percent, a difference of 3.5 percent percentage points to the national target of 70 percent established in the Europe Strategy 2020.

In the last quarter of 2016, Romania had around 8.4 million employed persons.
