Romania’s ruling coalition moots new government reshuffle | PM Grindeanu warns of political crisis risk

PM Sorin Grindeanu says that Romania needs political stability at this moment so that investors continue to trust the country, as several high ranking members of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) suggested that Grindeanu should be removed from office.

“We need to have enough political maturity and vision to take advantage (of opportunities – e.n.),” wrote Grindeanu on Facebook, adding that there needs to be a dialogue between the Presidency, the Government and the Parliament.

Gabriela Firea, the mayor of Bucharest, has been the first leading social democrat that voiced her concerns regarding the PM, claiming that the relation between Grindeanu’s team and the local administration was worse than in the mandate of technocratic PM Dacian Ciolos. Firea went on to say that Romania is ready for a woman PM.

Meanwhile, PSD head Liviu Dragnea said that the activity of the ministers will be evaluated, adding their main priority has to be the implementation of the governing program.

“I have never pushed and will never push somebody out of the boat. However, when you’re in a boat, and on water, you have to be careful not to shake too much or you will fall on your own. (…) I am a responsible person and I will not propose any measure that brings instability to this country,” said Dragnea. He added that the stability is not based on certain persons.

According to media reports, the top brass of the PSD might choose this week to drop the political support for PM Grindeanu, but this is still one of the scenarios being thrown out in public. However, Grindeanu has come under fire inside PSD for having a good relation with president Klaus Iohannis, a political rival of the social democrats.

Grindeanu has been in power for around six months and in this period he has changed several ministers. He has survived the massive political crisis generated by the attempted decriminalization of the abuse in office through a government ordinance that triggered street protests and international outcry. That draft bill was later abandoned.
