Romania’s households pay the lowest gas prices and the 5th lowest electricity prices in EU

The households in Romania paid in 2017 the lowest prices for gas and the fifth lowest prices for electricity among the 28 European Union member states, according to Eurostat.

“Expressed in euro, average household gas prices in the second half of 2017 were lowest in Romania (EUR 3.1 per 100 kWh), Croatia and Hungary (both EUR 3.7), Bulgaria (EUR 3.8), Latvia (EUR 3.9), Lithuania and Luxembourg (both EUR 4.0) and highest in Sweden (EUR 11.3), followed by Denmark (EUR 8.8), Spain and Italy (both EUR 8.7), the Netherlands (EUR 8.2) and Portugal (EUR 8.0),” Eurostat said.

The average gas price in the EU was EUR 6.3 per 100 kWh in the first half of 2017.

Adjusted for purchasing power, relative to the cost of other goods and services, the lowest household gas price was recorded last year in Luxembourg (3.3 PPS per 100 kWh), United Kingdom (4.5) and Belgium (5.1).

In contrast, the highest prices were observed in Portugal (10.0), Spain (9.6), Italy (8.9), Sweden (8.8) and the Czech Republic (8.3).

Average household electricity prices in the second half of 2017 were lowest in Bulgaria (EUR 9.8 per 100 kWh), Lithuania (EUR 11.1), Hungary (EUR 11.3), Croatia (EUR 12.4) and Romania (EUR 12.9).

The highest prices were recorded in Germany (EUR 30.5), Denmark (EUR 30.1) and Belgium (EUR 28.8), according to Eurostat.

The average electricity price in the EU was EUR 20.5 per 100 kWh.

Across the EU member states, the highest increase in household electricity prices in national currency between the second half of 2016 and the second half of 2017 was registered in Cyprus (+12.6 percent), followed by Romania (+7.2 percent), Malta (+7.1 percent), Estonia (+6.5 percent).
