Romanian start-up founders are inspired by Elon Musk, says study

One in five mature entrepreneurs in Romania is not inspired by any Romanian or foreign businessperson, according to two studies by professional services firm EY Romania.

The firm said that 41 percent of the mature entrepreneurs that were surveyed said that they are inspired by a Romanian successful entrepreneur in their career. Almost one in five entrepreneurs said that Ion Tiriac is a business model.

Asked about the foreign businesspeople that are inspiring figures for them, the Romanian businesspersons said they like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

In the case of start-up entrepreneurs, 46 percent of them said they are inspired by foreign businesspersons. Serial entrepreneur Elon Musk came first in their preferences. Musk is the CEO of Tesla Motors and founder of SpaceX and PayPal.

The data was crunched by the professional services from the Romanian Entrepreneurship Barometer 2016 and the Romanian Start-ups Barometer 2016.

In the case of the entrepreneurship study, EY Romania got answers from 350 businesspersons, out of which 73 percent are older than 40.

For the start-ups study, a large share of respondents are in the 25-35 age bracket.

Close to 50 percent of the respondents on the entrepreneurship study run businesses with a turnover above EUR 10 million. O the start-up barometer, 89 percent of the respondents had companies with a turnover below EUR 100,000.
