The Romanian Presidential Administration says that president Klaus Iohannis will not participate at the inauguration ceremony of US president-elect Donald Trump, scheduled for January 20, in Washington DC.
The institution said that the Romanian ambassador to the United States of America, George Maior, will represent the country at the ceremony.
“According to the practice of the USA regarding the inauguration ceremonies of new presidents, the heads of the diplomatic missions accredited at Washington are the only ones that officially represent the heads of states and their governments at the investiture events,” said the Romanian Presidential Administration in a statement. It added that this unwritten rule was confirmed by the invitation sent by the State Department to all the diplomatic missions of Washington.

The organization added that delegations of representatives of Romanian parties taking part at this event will not officially represent Romania.
Both PSD president, Liviu Dragnea, who is the president of the Chamber of Deputies and PM Sorin Grindeanu received invitations to attendt Trump’s inauguration, according to Mediafax newswire, which quotes public sources.

Dragnea said he will go and that will have “important meetings” in the US, but he did not elaborate on this statement.
President Iohannis congratulated Trump after winning the US presidential elections last November.
