In 2009, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per inhabitant in Romania, expressed in purchasing power standards (PPS), reached only 46 percent of the EU average making the country rank the second to last position among member states, according to data released this Wednesday by Eurostat. Last year Romania also registered a 1 percent decrease against 2008 when it reached 47 percent of the EU average.
The first position in the top is held by Luxembourg with a GDP per inhabitant of more than two and a half times the EU27 average, while the Netherlands recorded a level more than 30 percent above the average. Bulgaria ranks the last position with 44 percent, the same as in 2008.
