Romania entered the top of European states in which more than 1 percent of broadband connections take place via optic fiber, being on place 13 out of 17, with approximately 120,000 subscribers to these services and a penetration rate of 1.58 percent according to data from FTTH Council Europe. This ranking is part of the Market Panorama survey carried out by IDATE research company.

“FTTH ranking is a barometer that is acknowledged worldwide regarding the level of broadband connections of a country, and the presence on the FTTH list is a major achievement. The Council urges Romania to continue the implementation of connections via optic fiber, the government playing an important part in regulating conditions for the development of players on this market,” said the president of FTTH Council Europe, Chris Holden.

The data obtained in the first half of this year show that the new member states of the European Union are leading the ranking, holding three out of the first five places.

“If we take Russia into account, at the moment most of the connections through optic fiber FTTH are implemented in Eastern Europe, “shows a press release of FTTH Europe, via Mediafax newswire.

Most connections through optic fiber were installed by the small internet local suppliers who implemented neighborhood networks.

A project that will influence Romania’s position in this ranking is the fact that local authorities have started a public- private partnership for the development of the optic fiber backbone, due to the need to consolidate the infrastructure in the city by replacing suspended with underground backbone.
