Romania ranked 46th in the 2020 Global Innovation Index

Romania was ranked 46th in the 2020 Global Innovation Index. This was reflected in the Global Innovation Index study. The following places were taken by Vietnam (42), Greece (43), Thailand (44) and Ukraine (45). Romania’s best ranked neighbors were Hungary (35) and Bulgaria (37). The study, at its 13th edition, is co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

Switzerland is the first country in the ranking, Sweden, USA, UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Singapore, Germany and South Korea were also in the top ten. Yemen took the last place.

Since 2011, Switzerland has led the world in innovation according to the index, and the top five countries have seen few changes in recent years.

Sweden regained second place in 2019 and the U.S. moved into third—positions they maintain in 2020. The Netherlands entered the top two in 2018 and now sits at fifth.

 

The list includes 131 countries.

The Global Innovation Index is a ranking of countries in terms of the level of innovation development. It is calculated according to the methodology of the International Business School INSEAD (France). Experts take into account infrastructure, scientific activity, creativity, institutions, technology development, business development, capital.

Based on European standards, Romania is a Modest Innovator country, where the innovation performance of is below 50% of the EU average.
