Romania, registering an annual inflation of -3 percent in May, was among sixteen member states to post a negative inflation, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
Compared with April 2016, annual inflation fell in nine Member States, remained stable in eight and rose in eleven.
Romania’s inflation stood the lowest among EU members, followed by Bulgaria (-2.5 percent), Cyprus (-1.9 percent) and Croatia (-1.2 percent). At the other end of the scale, the highest annual rates were recorded in Belgium (1.6 percent), Malta (1.0 percent) and Sweden (0.8 percent).
The EU inflation stood at -0.1 percent, up from -0.2 percent in April, while a year earlier the rate was 0.3 percent. The euro area inflation reflected the EU numbers, standing at -0.1 percent, up from -0.2 percent in April.
