The undersea power cable project linking Romania to Turkey will not be introduced in the new energy strategy, said Corina Popescu, state secretary at the Energy Ministry. She said that a project that Romania wants cannot be supported taking into account that other countries should be involved, meaning Bulgaria and Turkey, according to Hotnews.

„I don’t believe in the undersea power cable. There’s no stable area currently. Being a project that involves more countries, it should be a common interest for both parties. Turkish people don’t have an interest for this project, because they want to grow the level of connectivity in alternative power, not in continuous power. I don’t think that Turkey will allocate money for this project,” said Popescu during a conference.

The new energy strategy will be finalized by October.

In December 2013, the former Government approved a memorandum regarding the project of  theundersea project and the setting up of project company “HVDCC Romania-Turkey SA”. The former delegated minister of Energy, Constantin Nita, asked in January 2014 more energy state-owned companies (Transelectrica, CE Hunedoara, Electrica, Hidroelectrica, Nuclearelectrica, Romgaz and CE Oltenia) to contribute with EUR 2 million each for setting up of the project company. However, Fondul Proprietatea was against this project, especially because Turkish people didn’t take any legal obligation of attending the setting up of the project company.
