Romania among EU countries with the fewest children raised by a single parent (Eurostat)

According to Eurostat data, at EU level, 15 percent of households with children were made up of single parents with children.

With about 1 in every 3 households being a single parent household, Denmark (30 percent) recorded the highest proportion of single adult households with children, ahead of Lithuania (26 percent), Sweden (24 percent), the UK (22 percent), Estonia (21 percent) and Latvia (20 percent).

In contrast, the lowest proportions of single adults with children were found in Croatia (6 percent of all households with dependent children), Romania (7 percent), Greece, Finland and Slovakia (all 8 percent).

In 2017, the EU counted 220 million households, almost a third of which had children.

Ireland had the highest proportion of households with children (40 percent), ahead of Cyprus and Poland (both 37 percent), Slovakia (36 percent), Portugal and Romania (both 35 percent).

In contrast, the lowest shares of households with children were in Germany and Finland (both 22 percent), followed by Bulgaria (25 percent), Austria (26 percent) and Sweden (28 percent).

Almost half of all households with children in the EU (47 percent, or 31 million households) had only one child, while 40 percent (26 million) had two children, and 13 percent (8.5 million) three children or more.

The highest share of households with three or more children was registered in Ireland (26 percent), followed by Belgium and Finland (both 19 percent), France (18 percent) and the United Kingdom (17 percent).

At the opposite end of the scale, less than 10 percent of households with children had at least three children in Bulgaria (5 percent), Portugal (6 percent), Spain and Italy (both 8 percent).
